  • Receiving derivative and link as child of existing specimen

Wondering is there any feature in OpenSpecimen that allow me to track specimen that were sent to external site for processing and the derivative product was sent back and stored in local site?

For example, I sent blood specimen from site A to site B for processing. The derivative is subsequently sent back from site B to A. Upon receipt of specimen at site A, can I link this derivative to the parent blood specimen?

    Many thanks.

    Hi Samuel,

    You can do the following:

    1. Use the Distribution module to distribute the specimens to Site B.

    2. During distribution, make sure you do not “Dispose” the specimen if you are expecting the derivatives back.

    3. Once you receive the derivatives, you can create the child specimens under the distributed specimen using UI or CSV import.

If you want to track any additional details of the derivatives (like date of receive), you can create a custom specimen event form and include it in the “Create derivative” page.

Let us know if this works for you.
