  • Collection Protocol Field: "Anticipated Participants Count"

When creating a collection protocol, “Anticipated Participants Count” is one optional field. This field has been present in OpenSpecimen since the days of caTissue, and I think the intended purpose of the field is to help with study team planning. We have not used this field. In terms of study participant recruitment, our clinical trials management system keeps track of participant enrollments. I wonder: do study teams actually use the “Anticipated Participants Count” field for planning purposes? Does this field have value?

From a bio-banking management perspective we use the Anticipated Participant Count in a formula to determine the maximum amount of freezer space to set aside for samples of a particular protocol. Each institute may have different solutions to store samples, be it by protocol and/or sample types, so this field may or may not be of use for everyone.
