  • New type - Cellular Pellet

One of the users has asked to add specimen type ‘Cellular Pellet’. Is this useful to add in generic release in addition to already existing type ‘Frozen Cell Pellet’ under ‘Cell’ class.

    Thanks,
    Poornima

What would be the difference between a Frozen cell pellet and Cellular Pellet?

As per my understanding, Cellular Pellet is what is derived from blood and once its frozen it becomes ‘Frozen Cell Pellet’. User was referring to Cellular Pellet to capture ‘Red Blood Cells’ isolated from blood.

    Thanks,
    Poornima

Yes we use the Frozen Cell Pellet to represent the white blood cells (leukocytes and platelets) that have been isolated, spun to create a pellet then frozen. Seems to me they are both Frozen Cell Pellets. The issue is there is not a way to say this is a White Blood cell frozen cell pellet verses this other frozen cell pellet is Red Blood cells (Erythrocytes). Do they actually get a red blood cell pellet? I am thinking back to my days processing specimens and I don’t remember really getting a pellet. It was more like 3ml of fluid than it was a pellet. I do agree there needs to be a better way to capture the storage of red blood cells as we have struggled with that in the past. Now granted they could be processing the whole blood different than I was too. I think I would argue (just for the sake of it) that the red blood cells that remain after the plasma and Buffy coat (containing the leukocytes and platelets) are removed the remaining red blood cells (Erythrocytes) that remain in the tube are more fluid than a cell pellet. Once the Buffy coats is lysed and washed an actual pellet is created…Just food for thought. Do they process the red blood cells down more to create a pellet?

    Hi @Amy_Brink,

The user wants to capture the volume of Cellular Pellet in ml, so we ended up adding this type for them only under fluid. They also needed RBCs which we added under fluid again.

We will get more details about the procedure to extract these and revisit this for generic feature in future.

    Thanks for your inputs.
