  • OpenSpecimen v2.0: Tablet (e.g. iPad) support

Did you know OpenSpecimen v2.0 will support tablets?

    Why is it important?

Enhanced productivity and better quality data.

Lesser the time needed to enter data in OpenSpecimen, better is the productivity. Many biobanking tasks are done away from the desktop. For example, a technician in front of the freezer, wants to check what a box contains, or scan a barcode of a vial and check its details. A nurse standing at the clinic wants to register a participant or add consent information.

Wouldn’t it be much easier using hand-held device rather than running back and forth to a desktop?

Why a tablet and not mobile?

Tablets provide more screen space than a mobile. E.g. viewing contents of a box or registering a participant is much easier in a tablet than a mobile. Having said that a native mobile app will be developed by the end of 2015 after discussing the use cases with the community.

How to access OpenSpecimen via tablet? Ans: Via the browser

OpenSpecimen’s user interface is highly “responsive”. It means based on the type of device and the screen size, it automatically adjusts itself. In other words, the same user interface will work seamlessly across devices. The end users will be get a consistent user experience across desktops and tablets. No separate training required.

Any questions or feedback? Just reply to this thread.

One of our users just asked about support of OS for an iPad specifically. In previous versions of the application, we understand some modules depend on flash, which Apple has not supported. Will there be differences in function of v2.0 between Apple and non-Apple tablets? Will full function of the application be available on a tablet or only certain modules?

    Hi @Matthew_Marcetich

All features will be supported on any tablet in OS v2.0 via web browser.

    Thanks,

To elaborate, from any device you should be able to access OpenSpecimen via a browser. It will display the same web UI on all devices with the screen automatically adjusted to display within the available screen size.

Moving forward, we would like to develop specific screens designed for use cases specific to usage of tablets/phones and/or native mobile apps.
